The 250 Greatest Americans is a long-form civic project devoted to identifying, rediscovering, and ranking the men and women whose lives most shaped the American experiment.

America did not arrive fully formed. Americans argued the nation into existence, then defended it imperfectly, extended it unevenly, and renewed it again and again. They did so by wise choices that carried consequences far beyond their own time. Some are celebrated, others contested, many misunderstood, but all mattered.

This project proceeds from a few simple beliefs: that judgments about the past, though unavoidable, need not be careless. That character and consequence can be weighed together. And that the American past deserves neither nostalgia nor disdain, but serious, grateful attention.

Rankings are published gradually, in tiers, alongside essays that explore the reasoning behind the highest placements. The project is finite, deliberate, and open about its assumptions.

This is an invitation to take the long view, to read slowly, to disagree thoughtfully, and to return to the American project.

America is a great country and a good country because Americans are a great and good people. Although this project highlights the greatest, it highlights only a few. Millions more have contributed, and millions more will still, long after this author has departed.
